Meta Superintelligence Labs: A Bold Leap Toward AGI Leadership
Meta has officially launched Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL), a new initiative designed to make the company a global leader in artificial general intelligence (AGI). Announced through an internal memo by CEO Mark Zuckerberg, this move marks a major shift in Meta’s evolving AI strategy.
Integrating AI Powerhouses Under One Roof
MSL brings together Meta’s existing AI projects, such as the open-source Llama models and the Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) division. By merging these efforts into one powerful unit, Meta aims to develop the next generation of AI systems faster and more effectively. Leading this bold effort is Alexandr Wang, former CEO of Scale AI, who has joined Meta as Chief AI Officer. He will head MSL alongside Nat Friedman, ex-CEO of GitHub and a respected AI investor, who will oversee product and applied research.
This leadership duo reflects Meta’s serious intent to compete directly with AI giants like OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Microsoft. Their combined experience is expected to accelerate innovation across Meta’s AI platforms.
To support this mission, Meta is investing $14.3 billion into AI infrastructure. The company has also hired top talent from Anthropic, OpenAI, and other leading AI labs. One major hire includes Daniel Gross, co-founder of Safe Superintelligence, who brings deep technical expertise.
These strategic moves position Meta to lead not just in scale, but also in the quality of AI development.
Zuckerberg described superintelligence as “the beginning of a new era for humanity.” He emphasized Meta’s unique ability to deliver AI tools to billions of users responsibly and at scale, thanks to its global platform reach and technical foundation.
Moreover, he underlined the company’s commitment to safe, ethical development while pushing the boundaries of what AI can achieve.
Meta has already deployed the upcoming Llama 4.1 and 4.2 models across its platforms. These models now serve over one billion users every month. Meanwhile, MSL has begun work on a new generation of frontier models, built by a “small, talent-dense” team focused on breakthrough advancements.
The Vision: Personal Superintelligence for All
Ultimately, Meta aims to move beyond simple AI assistants. With MSL, the company is laying the groundwork for true foundational AI infrastructure—one that supports personal superintelligence accessible to everyone.
More talent announcements are expected in the coming weeks, reinforcing Meta’s commitment to shaping the future of AI.
