China Urges Dialogue and Mutual Respect Amid US Trade Tensions
China is calling for balanced and respectful talks to ease US trade tensions, stressing the need for a stable, mutually beneficial commercial relationship with the United States. At a press conference on Friday, Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao said that Beijing wants to bring trade ties back to a “healthy and sustainable” level. He told the U.S. to be a responsible world leader.
Wang claimed that China’s commerce sector is still strong and able to handle problems across the world. China wants to increase both imports and exports as part of its new five-year plan. He said that ongoing governmental support has helped exports do well even when things are challenging outside of the country.
Wang added that all parties have learnt important lessons from past trade problems. He called the idea of forcing China and the U.S. to break up “unrealistic.” He says that many commercial flows between the two countries are hard to replace, especially in the short run.
Dialogue Over Confrontation
Wang said that even though there have been problems in the past, China and the U.S. are still important economic partners. He said that it was important to settle differences through equitable conversation and consultation instead of fighting.
Wang’s words come at a time when the two countries are under more pressure than ever to establish common ground. Donald Trump, the President of the United States, raised taxes on Chinese goods to more than 100% earlier this year. Even while many were put on hold during a short truce in May, fresh tariffs might come back if an agreement isn’t struck by August 12.
Wang said that the average U.S. tax on Chinese imports is currently 53.6%, which is very high. He warned that “there are no winners in a trade war.” China doesn’t desire a fight, but it will safeguard its own interests at all costs.
Wang added, “Big countries need to act like big countries.” He asked the U.S. to be a leader by taking responsibility and cooperating with China to keep the world economy stable.
China’s message is clear: it is open to talks on fair trade, but it will protect its economic sovereignty even while trade tensions with the US continue.
