Meta Taps XGS Energy to Pioneer 150MW Geothermal Project in New Mexico

In a bold move toward sustainable energy, Meta Taps XGS Energy to develop a 150-megawatt geothermal power plant in New Mexico. This project marks a major step in Meta’s clean energy plans, especially as it expands AI infrastructure and data centers. The partnership, announced Thursday, highlights growing tech industry interest in geothermal power as a reliable, low-emission energy source.

A New Chapter in Clean Energy Innovation

Unlike traditional geothermal systems, which use open-loop methods, XGS Energy employs a closed-loop design. This system eliminates water use by sealing it inside the loop. It also uses a proprietary mud around the well casing to improve heat transfer. The result is a more efficient and eco-friendly system with reduced environmental impact.

Meta clarified that this is not a direct power purchase agreement. Instead, it’s an early-stage development partnership aimed at boosting geothermal deployment in the region. A Meta spokesperson told TechCrunch the initiative supports the company’s long-term clean energy goals.

Meeting AI’s Energy Demands with Geothermal

AI and data centers demand huge amounts of electricity. This puts pressure on tech companies to find sustainable energy sources. Geothermal power offers consistent, 24/7 energy with minimal emissions. Meta’s move shows its commitment to meeting these demands responsibly.

A recent Rhodium Group report suggests advanced geothermal could supply up to two-thirds of new U.S. data center power needs by 2030. With this partnership, Meta positions itself ahead of the curve, joining other major players exploring innovative energy options.

XGS Energy’s Expanding Role in the Sector

Earlier this year, XGS Energy raised $20 million in Series A funding. The funds will support a commercial-scale geothermal prototype in California. The startup’s closed-loop tech has drawn attention for both its efficiency and scalability—key advantages for large operations like Meta’s.

As AI drives up power demand, and sustainability becomes essential, Meta’s partnership with XGS Energy may help reshape how clean power supports the digital economy.
