OpenAI Launches Study Feature for ChatGPT to Support Smarter Learning
OpenAI has introduced a new Study Feature for ChatGPT aimed at enhancing how students learn through the platform. Called Study Mode, This tool is meant to help people think more deeply and critically, not just give them immediate answers. Anyone who is logged in can now use it, no matter what plan they are on (Free, Plus, Pro, or Team). OpenAI also said that this feature will soon be available for ChatGPT Edu, the version of ChatGPT that schools utilize with their pupils.
Study Feature for ChatGPT Encourages Active Engagement
Study Mode helps people learn more deeply by making them think more about what they’re doing. ChatGPT may now ask learners follow-up questions or have them show effort before giving them answers, instead of just answering questions right away. This method helps students learn how to solve problems and think critically, which makes the learning experience more participatory and student-led.
A Measured Response to AI Criticism in Education
The Study Feature for ChatGPT is part of OpenAI’s broader effort to address concerns about passive learning. Since the release of ChatGPT in 2022, its use in schools has been a subject of debate. Some institutions initially banned the tool over fears it could undermine academic integrity. However, many schools began to explore safe and structured integration methods by 2023.
Leah Belsky, OpenAI’s Vice President of Education, acknowledged the need for change. In a recent interview, she explained that the goal is to shift ChatGPT from being just an answer provider to a true learning partner.
Research Highlights the Need for Active Learning
A study published in June revealed that students relying heavily on ChatGPT for tasks like essay writing showed lower levels of brain activity compared to those using traditional research methods or working independently. This raised concerns about the long-term impact of AI on cognitive development. Study Mode is OpenAI’s response to ensure the tool supports learning instead of replacing it.
Study Mode is an optional feature, but OpenAI might add parental or school-level controls in future releases. Right now, it’s up to the pupils to use it properly.
OpenAI’s Study Feature for ChatGPT is different from what other AI companies have done since it shows how educational technology can empower instead of just enable. The company aims to share more information about how students use this technology in the future to help make digital learning even better.
