Steel and Aluminium Tariffs Doubled to 50%, Says Trump

Trump Doubles Down on Steel and Aluminium Tariffs, Announces $14 Billion Investment Deal

Former President Donald Trump has declared a sharp escalation in Steel and Aluminium Tariffs, announcing that the United States will raise import duties from 25% to 50%, beginning Wednesday. The announcement came during a rally in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where Trump told a crowd of steelworkers that the decision would strengthen domestic manufacturing, cut dependency on foreign producers—particularly China—and revitalize the struggling American steel industry.

Trump emphasized that the increased Steel and Aluminium Tariffs would play a crucial role in restoring the nation’s steel production, especially in states like Pennsylvania, historically considered the backbone of American manufacturing. “At 50%, they can no longer get over the fence,” Trump said, adding that domestic steel must once again form the foundation of American infrastructure and defense.

In a surprising addition to the tariff hike, Trump announced plans for a $14 billion investment in U.S. steel production, as part of a new partnership between US Steel and Japan’s Nippon Steel. While he noted that the final agreement had not yet been approved, he framed the investment as a major victory for American industry. This development follows the Biden administration’s 2023 decision to block Nippon’s proposed acquisition of US Steel on national security grounds.

Promises of Job Security and Worker Bonuses

Addressing concerns over foreign partnerships and their potential impact on American jobs, Trump assured the audience that there would be “no layoffs and no outsourcing whatsoever.” He also pledged that every steelworker would receive a $5,000 bonus. JoJo Burgess, a local United Steelworkers member and mayor of nearby Washington, Pennsylvania, praised the move, calling it “a good day for steelworkers,” though he noted he remains a Democratic voter.

Steel and Aluminium Tariffs Spark International Tensions

Trump’s tariff-driven approach has reignited global trade tensions, especially with China. Earlier this month, Trump accused China of breaching a trade truce—an allegation later clarified by the U.S. Trade Representative to involve non-tariff barriers. China responded by urging the U.S. to halt discriminatory measures, without addressing the claims directly.

Trump used the rally to reiterate his belief that a strong domestic steel industry is vital for national defense. “If you don’t have steel, you don’t have a country,” he told the crowd, warning against relying on nations like China for critical military materials. The ongoing legal challenges over his tariffs have yet to touch those on steel and aluminium, allowing Trump to continue wielding them as a central tool in his economic policy.
