Trump Administration Halts Federal Grants to Harvard Over Campus Policies
The U.S. Department of Education, under the Trump administration, has suspended billions in future research grants and aid to Harvard University. This decision follows rising concerns about campus protests, allegations of antisemitism, and Harvard’s diversity policies.
Trump Administration Demands Strict Campus Reforms
Education Secretary Linda McMahon directly informed Harvard President Dr. Alan Garber of the changes. The administration stated that no more federal funding would be released unless Harvard adopts several new measures. These include banning face masks at protests, allowing law enforcement to arrest agitators, and adopting a broader definition of antisemitism—one that could include criticism of Israel.

Harvard Pushes Back, Calls Demands Unconstitutional
Harvard strongly rejected these federal demands. The university argued that the changes threaten academic freedom and violate constitutional rights. As a result, Harvard has filed a lawsuit, claiming that the funding freeze could disrupt essential research and harm both students and staff.
Funding Freeze Puts Billions at Risk for Harvard
The halted funding affects $2.2 billion in existing grants. Additionally, it could block up to $9 billion in future federal support. Although Harvard has a $53 billion endowment, it cannot freely use most of those funds. In fact, the university relies on federal money for 11% of its annual budget—around $686 million in 2024 alone.
