US Agency Announces $126 Million in Refunds for Fortnite Players Over Unwanted Charges
In a major relief for Fortnite players, the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has announced over $126 million in refunds. The payments will go to users wrongly charged for in-game purchases. Refunds are scheduled for June 25 and 26 and will go to players who submitted valid claims before February 14.
Refunds Follow Epic Games Settlement Over Deceptive Practices
The refunds stem from a 2023 settlement between the FTC and Epic Games, the developer of Fortnite. The FTC alleged that Epic used deceptive tactics that led players—especially minors—to make unintended purchases. As part of the settlement, Epic agreed to pay $245 million.
At the time, Epic said: “We accepted this agreement because we want Epic to be at the forefront of consumer protection and provide the best experience for our players.”
Second Round of Refunds to Reach Nearly 1 Million Fortnite Players
This is the second round of refunds being distributed. It includes 969,173 payments via checks and PayPal. The first round, issued in December 2024, included over 629,000 payments totaling $72 million. With the latest round, total refunds will near $200 million—making it one of the largest in gaming history.
The FTC has reopened the refund process. This gives more Fortnite players and their guardians a chance to apply. Players now have until July 9 to file a claim.
To do so, they can visit the official FTC website, search for “Fortnite Refunds,” and fill out the form. This step ensures that those who missed the original deadline can still qualify.
